The grade 7 students at Jacquet River School planted a garden in the inner court of the school. The healthy vegetables will be harvested in the fall. The goal is to use their produce to make a pizza that will include the following: radish, asparagus, zucchini, tomatoes, onions, green peppers, red peppers and jalapenos. They will also be growing corn, cucumbers and string beans which they can use to make a side dish. The garden will not be open to the public this year.
In addition to planting a garden, they are also composting food waste. Jacquet River School is the first school in Northern New Brunswick to receive the Green Cone Digester. A Green Cone Digester is a plastic cone which you put in the ground to turn food waste into compost.
