Imagine
building your own robot to help you with your work. Now combine that
with playing with Lego and you have students hooked. Grades 3 and 5
students at Jacquet River School are stating a new project in their
science classes called Lego Robotics. Not only do students get to build
a robot from Lego but they also get to program the robot themselves.
This experience is made possible by the generous donations from NBCC
Miramichi and Tim Horton’s.
Jacquet
River School is the first school in New Brunswick to be participating
in this venture. They are working closely with NBCC Miramichi on the
project as the NBCC students are creating pieces they can use. In May,
the students will be making a presentation at the NBCC AGM.
Building
the robots is not only fun but also educational. The students are
developing their creativity, time management skills, and engineering
skills while following instructions and using technology to program the
robot to perform specific tasks. The theme of this year’s project is
Nature’s Fury and the robots need to be programmed to solve problems
related to natural disasters.
